A burning sensation in your nose may start out mild, but it can quickly turn into a frustrating symptom. Identifying the source is the first step to finding relief. Let’s explore some common causes of nasal irritation and how you can manage them.
1. Allergies

If your nose burns, allergies could be the culprit. Common allergens like pollen, pet dander, mold and dust mites can inflame your nasal passages, causing discomfort. While spring and summer allergies get the most attention, indoor allergens can be just as irritating—especially in winter when you spend more time in your home. A few ways you can manage indoor allergies include:
- Clean your home regularly. Vacuum, dust, wash bedding and bathe pets regularly to minimize dust and pet dander allergens.
- Prevent mold growth. Reduce mold buildup by using exhaust fans while cooking or showering. If mold does start to grow, remove it quickly using a mold and mildew cleaner. White vinegar or baking soda are great alternatives to traditional bleach products.
- Check your plants. Indoor plants like ferns and weeping figs can release pollen and spores into your home. Before heading to the Glover Nursery for indoor decoration, research the most allergy-friendly plants for your home.

2. Nonallergic Rhinitis
Nonallergic rhinitis causes symptoms similar to allergies, including sneezing, congestion and a runny nose, but isn’t triggered by allergens. Instead, environmental irritants like smoke, strong odors, weather changes or spicy foods can set it off.
Your provider may recommend antihistamines, steroids, saline nasal sprays or decongestants to help control symptoms. If you know what’s causing your nonallergic rhinitis, remove the substance. For example, if strong chemicals or odors are at fault, try switching to scent-free beauty products and green cleaners.
3. Sinus Infections
A sinus infection can cause inflammation and irritation in your nasal passages. Other symptoms may include congestion, facial pressure or a headache. Most viral sinus infections will clear on their own within 10 days. If your sinus infection sticks around longer or causes severe symptoms, contact one of our ENT providers for a treatment consultation.
4. Frequent Nose Blowing
Blowing your nose too often or forcefully, especially when dealing with a cold or sinus infection, can dry out and irritate your nasal passages. Always blow your nose gently, one nostril at a time. You can use a saline rinse or short-term decongestants to clear congestion without causing further irritation.
