Many people have experienced a cold or other virus that turns into a sinus infection. In fact, researchers found that “over a one-year period, there were up to 73 million restricted-activity days related to sinusitis.”
The good news is that for a lot of people, the symptoms of sinusitis, like nasal congestion, runny nose and sinus pressure, can all be managed at home with rest, hydration and the proper self-care techniques. However, there are also several mistakes you want to avoid when treating your infection at home.
Using Tap Water for Nasal Irrigation
Nasal irrigation with a saline rinse can be a helpful way to alleviate congestion and discomfort caused by a sinus infection. However, it’s important that you use water that has been sterilized and not tap water taken directly from your sink. Instead, use premade solutions, distilled water or water that has been boiled and then cooled to rinse your sinuses and avoid the risk of being infected with a parasite.
Using Steam, That Is Too Hot
In addition to nasal irrigation, breathing in steam can also be soothing for many people with sinus issues. Many people do this by boiling a pot of water and then placing a towel over their heads while leaning over the liquid. If you do this, make sure to let the water cool for a little bit and that you don’t put your face too close to the water to avoid burns.
Taking Medications That You Don’t Need
Some people are quick to want to take antibiotics when they’re feeling under the weather. However, if you’ve had your symptoms for less than a week and they aren’t severe, this medication is usually unnecessary. Sinus infections are usually caused by a viral illness, so treating them with antibiotics not only may be unhelpful but could contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Waiting Too Long to See an ENT Specialist
While many acute sinus infections can clear up with home remedies and proper rest, consider seeing a specialist if you have symptoms lasting longer than a week. You may need additional treatments to alleviate your symptoms. Additionally, if you have chronic sinusitis, which is any sinus infection lasting 12 weeks or longer, you may have nasal polyps, allergies or other conditions that are contributing to your symptoms.
