Typically, one might make an appointment with an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat) doctor when experiencing symptoms such as a stuffy nose, loss of smell or signs of nasal polyps. For more advanced procedures and cases related to conditions to the nose, it might make more sense to specifically see a rhinologist.
What Rhinologists Treat
Rhinologists treat any condition related to disorders of the nose. Most commonly, this may include:
- Rhinitis
- Acute and chronic Sinusitis
- Seasonal and environmental allergies
- Congestion
- Post-Nasal Drip
- Facial pain and pressure
- Loss of smell or taste
- Nasal and tear duct blockages
- Nasal drainage
- CSF Leaks
- Sinonasal and pituitary tumors
- Polyps
Rhinologists must complete at least an additional year of training through fellowships. Most rhinologists also partner with other physicians and surgeons to treat complex conditions.
Should You See a Rhinologist?
This screener should give you more of an idea as to whether you need to schedule an appointment with a rhinologist:
- Do you have trouble breathing in one or both sides of your nose?
- Do you experience a runny nose often, even if you don’t appear to have a cold or other symptoms?
- Do you experience pain or pressure in your sinuses more than once a month?
- Do you have a history of frequent sinus infections?
If you answered “yes” to two or more of these questions, you should schedule an appointment with a rhinologist as soon as possible.
