The two most common causes of hearing loss are advanced age and noise exposure. But did you know that there are certain household bugs that can contribute, too? In this post, we review which bugs can and how you can protect your hearing.

Bedbugs

The common bedbug, Cimex lectularius, is a pest that can be found throughout the world. They are most commonly associated with skin problems; however, according to one study, they can cause ear-related problems (otitis) as well. The article states, “A patient presented with complaints of right ear irritation for several days’ duration. A foreign body was lavaged from the ear canal, which proved to be an engorged nymphal form of Cimex lectularius. The parasite had apparently obtained a blood feed from the tympanic membrane [eardrum].”

When you buy used furniture, check it carefully for bedbugs. With your furniture at home, you can invest in protective covers in order to eliminate hiding spots. You should also vacuum frequently. If you suspect you have bedbugs, call an exterminator immediately.

Cicadas

Cicadas, or Cicadoidea, emerge from the ground every 13 to 17 years. Though they’re not around for very long, when they are, they can produce noise as loud as 100 dB – close to the volume of a motorcycle or a jackhammer. Noise this loud can cause permanent damage to your auditory system in as little as 15 minutes.

The good news is, most of the time, cicadas are found outdoors, but that doesn’t mean they can’t find ways to enter your home. If you see any cicadas outside, cover any cracks or crevices on the exterior of your home, and if you find one inside, remove it promptly.

Toxoplasma Gondii

Toxoplasma Gondii is a parasite that can cause toxoplasmosis, a condition linked to hearing problems. If you eat contaminated or undercooked meat, or if you are exposed to pet waste and don’t practice good hygiene after, you can get toxoplasmosis.

Prevent exposure to this pest by keeping meats refrigerated and/or frozen until you’re ready to eat them, investing in a good meat thermometer to ensure your food is cooked through and washing your hands after cleaning your cat’s litter box.
