Data indicates that about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24589314\/\" target=\"_blank\">10% of people<\/a> present to primary healthcare services with sore throat each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many different conditions can cause your throat to hurt. Let\u2019s look at a few of the more common causes as well as potential treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sore Throat Causes <\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" src=\"https:\/\/southvalleyent.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/iStock-1277787400-scaled-1-256x256.jpg\" alt=\"Sick woman staying at home with a sore throat.\" class=\"wp-image-2474\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>While not an exhaustive list, some of the more common sore throat causes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Upper respiratory viruses like the common cold, flu or COVID-19<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mononucleosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/southvalleyent.com\/?p=198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tonsillitis<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bronchitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sinus infection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allergies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoking or exposure to cigarette smoke<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/southvalleyent.com\/?p=190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acid reflux<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irritation caused by pollution or exposure to chemicals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is It Strep Throat?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Strep throat is a common bacterial infection and a leading cause of sore throats. In addition to throat pain, other symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain when swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>White patches on the throat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red and\/or swollen tonsils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Red spots on the roof of your mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swollen lymph nodes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Call and make an appointment with a medical provider if you have symptoms of strep throat. Since the infection is caused by bacteria, it requires antibiotics to treat. Your symptoms should start to improve 1-3 days after you start your medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Your Sore Throat at Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the cause of your sore throat doesn\u2019t require medication to treat, there are plenty of ways to help relieve your symptoms and feel better at home. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Getting a lot of rest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using a humidifier or vaporizer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and moisten the throat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using lozenges or throat sprays<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drinking warm tea with honey<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gargling with warm salt water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Picking up some cold treats, like popsicles at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maceys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Macey\u2019s<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using over-the-counter pain medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is a Sore Throat Ever a Sign of Something More Serious?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On rare occasions, a persistent sore throat coupled with other symptoms may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a tumor or epiglottitis, a rare infection that can cause your airways to close, making it difficult to breathe.
