However, if your symptoms last for over three weeks, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30521292\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">considered chronic laryngitis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Laryngitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While you may not experience every symptom listed below, common laryngitis symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Hoarseness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weak voice or total loss of voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sore, dry throat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain when talking or swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry cough<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do I Have Laryngitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Laryngitis can be caused by various factors. Oftentimes, acute laryngitis and chronic laryngitis have different causes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of Acute Laryngitis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Viral infections like the cold or flu<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocal strain caused by yelling or overusing your voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less commonly bacterial infections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of Chronic Laryngitis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/southvalleyent.com\/?p=190\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acid reflux<\/a> (GERD)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to irritants such as chemicals or allergens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic sinusitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly overusing your voice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular, excessive alcohol use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Conditions That Can Affect Your Voice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Other conditions can cause symptoms that are similar to laryngitis, including<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Benign vocal lesions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocal cord paralysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laryngeal cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The only way to know for sure what is causing your symptoms is to visit a doctor. They will ask about your symptoms, listen to your voice and examine your vocal cords. In some cases, additional testing may be required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can You Prevent Laryngitis?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can help prevent irritation of your vocal cords by taking the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink plenty of water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit your consumption of alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid regularly clearing your throat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice good hygiene, such as washing your hands and avoiding contact with sick people when possible to reduce your risk of respiratory infections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treating Laryngitis Symptoms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most cases of acute laryngitis will clear up on their own.
