Otolaryngologists complete up to 15 years of college and post-graduate training, including medical school. Many also complete a one- or two-year fellowship to gain more extensive training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All otolaryngologists must be certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are seven areas of expertise in the field of otolaryngology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Allergy.<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for hay fever, seasonal rhinitis and chronic sinus infections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for deviated septums, face lifts and rhinoplasty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Head and Neck.<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for thyroid disorders, lumps in the neck and cancer of the voice box.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Laryngology (throat).<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for sore throats, swallowing disorders and GERD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Otology\/Neurotology (ears).<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for ear infections, hearing loss and tinnitus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pediatric Otolaryngology.<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for tonsil and adenoid infections, asthma and sinus disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rhinology (nose).<\/strong>&nbsp;This includes treatment for stuffy noses, loss of smell and nasal polyps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a handy self-screener that can help you determine if you should see an ENT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you experience frequent hoarseness or sore throat?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you ever been told or suspect that you snore and\/or stop breathing while you sleep?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have you experienced four or more sinus infections in the past year?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are your nasal symptoms worse in the spring, summer and\/or fall?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you every experience facial pain, facial pressure, sinus headaches or congestions?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing an ear, nose or throat disorder.
